Index 283 CONTENTS ix PREFACE This self-contained book, consisting of seven chapters, is devoted to Kalman filter theory applied to the training and use of neural networks, and some applications of learning algorithms derived in this way. It is organized as follows: Chapter 1 presents an introductory treatment of Kalman filters, with emphasis on basic Kalman filter theory, the Rauch–Tung–Striebel smoother, and the extended Kalman filter. Chapter 2 presents the theoretical basis of a powerful learning algorithm for the training of feedforward and recurrent multilayered perceptrons, based on the decoupled extended Kalman filter (DEKF); the theory presented here also includes a novel technique called multistreaming. Chapters 3 and 4 present applications of the DEKF learning algorithm to the study of image sequences and the dynamic reconstruction of chaotic processes, respectively. Chapter 5 studies the dual estimation problem, which refers to the problem of simultaneously estimating the state of a nonlinear dynamical system and the model that gives rise to the underlying dynamics of the system. Chapter 6 studies how to learn stochastic nonlinear dynamics. This difficult learning task is solved in an elegant manner by combining two algorithms: 1. The expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, which provides an iterative procedure for maximum-likelihood estimation with missing hidden variables. 2. The extended Kalman smoothing (EKS) algorithm for a refined estimation of the state. xi Chapter 7 studies yet another novel idea – the unscented Kalman filter – the performance of which is superior to that of the extended Kalman filter. Except for Chapter 1, all the other chapters present illustrative applications of the learning algorithms described here, some of which involve the use of simulated as well as real-life data. Much of the material presented here has not appeared in book form before. This volume should be of serious …

Motion detection by a moving observer using Kalman filter and neural network in soccer robot

In many autonomous mobile applications, robots must be capable of analyzing motion of moving objects in their environment. Duringmovement of robot the quality of images is affected by quakes of camera which cause high errors in image processing outputs. In thispaper, we propose a novel method to effectively overcome this problem using Neural Networks and Kalman Filtering theory. Thistechnique u...

Adaptive Filtering based on Recurrent Neural Networks

Kalman filter is an optimal filtering solution in certain cases, however, it is more often than not, regarded as a non-robust filter. The slight mismatch in noise statistics or process model may lead to large performance deterioration and the loss of optimality. This research paper proposes an alternative method for robust adaptive filtering concerning lack of information of noise statistics. T...

Sensorless Speed Control of Double Star Induction Machine With Five Level DTC Exploiting Neural Network and Extended Kalman Filter

This article presents a sensorless five level DTC control based on neural networks using Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) applied to Double Star Induction Machine (DSIM). The application of the DTC control brings a very interesting solution to the problems of robustness and dynamics. However, this control has some drawbacks such as the uncontrolled of the switching frequency and the strong ripple t...

Preliminary Testing and Analysis of an Adaptive Neural Network Training Kalman Filtering Algorithm

An adaptive neural network training Kalman filtering algorithm is implemented. The XOR problem and a benchmark problem for diagnosis of breast cancer are used for testing and analysis of the algorithm behavior. Results show that the algorithm performs well on both problems having the desirable characteristics of beeing simple to implement, with parallel processing features and good numerical be...

An Adaptive State Filtering Algorithm for Systems With Partially Known Dynamics

On-line filtering of stochastic variables that are difficult or expensive to directly measure has been widely studied. In this paper a practical algorithm is presented for adaptive state filtering when the underlying nonlinear state equations are partially known. The unknown dynamics are constructively approximated using neural networks. The proposed algorithm is based on the two-step predictio...
